Who’s the best Defenseman in NHL history?

There have been many great defensemen throughout the history of hockey. There was Pierre Pilote and Red Kelly in the 50’s, Brad Park and Marcel Pronovost in the 60’s and many others over the decades, but if, as a hockey fan, you had to pick one, who would it be?

Bobby Orr

Orr redefined what the position was meant to be. He would create rushes from his own end of the ice. Orr won eight straight Norris Trophies (1968- 75), three Harts and two scoring titles, which was a rare accomplishment for a defenseman. He led Boston to the Stanley Cup in 1970 and 1972, when he also won the Conn Smythe Trophy.

Ray Bourque

Bourque played with complete leadership and integrity. He’s the all-time leader among defensemen in goals (410), assists (1,169) and points (1,579). He made two trips to the Cup finals and 13 First-Team All-Star selections.

Doug Harvey

Harvey was well recognized for his exceptional skating and passing skills. He won the Norris Trophy seven times and was named to the NHL All-Star team 11 times. He was a key player for the Canadiens on six Stanley Cup championship teams, which included their record five in a row (1956-60). Later, he moved on to the Rangers.

Nicklas Lidstrom

Lidstrom, who is a 2015 Hall of Famer, was dubbed the perfect hockey player, due to his all around play. He was a four-time Stanley Cup winner with 1,142 career points and seven Norris Trophies. With the Red Wings he reached the playoffs each season of his 20-year career.

Larry Robinson

Robinson helped lead Montreal to four straight Stanley Cups (1976-79). Due to his height and long reach, he was tough to elude. At the end of his career, he finished with the highest plus-minus rating (+730) in NHL history and later won his seventh Cup as coach of the Devils in 2000.

northDsports.com finds it very difficult to pick the best ever defensemen. Due to differing characteristics and attributes of play we could choose several. Tell us what you think?
